From 19 to 21 April 2023, a diverse cohort of managers, departmental leaders, and supervisors gathered at The Hilton Hotel in Sandton, Johannesburg for a landmark Emotional Intelligence (EQ) workshop. Rather than previewing what was to come, this article reflects on three days of immersive learning, interactive exercises, and thought-provoking discussions—designed to help leaders navigate the complexities of multicultural teams and drive sustainable performance through heightened self-awareness and empathy.
Workshop Recap
Day One opened with a deep dive into the business case for EQ, where participants examined the latest research showing how emotionally intelligent leadership boosts engagement and reduces stress. Through case studies tailored to multifunctional environments, attendees explored the core components of EQ (self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management) while reflecting on their own strengths and blind spots. By closing time, small groups had drafted personal action statements outlining how they would harness these components to tackle real-world challenges back in their units.
The focus shifted on Day Two toward the art and science of influence. Using brain-function primers and role-plays, leaders discovered how emotional triggers shape decision-making and learned to leverage the “Law of Connection” to foster trust across diverse personality types. Rather than abstract theory, every concept was applied in live simulations: attendees practiced rapid-cycle feedback loops, tested stakeholder mapping techniques, and co-created communication plans that balanced logic with genuine empathy.
On the final day, participants built on these insights by developing their own leadership brands and strategic roadmaps. Drawing on scenario-planning exercises, they identified white-space opportunities for collaboration between departments and sketched out 90-day sprint plans to embed EQ practices into daily routines. In a spirited peer-review session, each leader received candid feedback on their roadmap’s clarity, ambition, and measures of success, ensuring that every plan was both aspirational and actionable.
Participant Insights
According to our post-workshop survey, 93 % of attendees reported a palpable shift in their confidence to manage emotional dynamics under pressure. Many singled out the brain-function module as “eye-opening,” noting that simply understanding the neurological basis of stress helped them pause before reacting. Others praised the group exercises on personality considerations, saying that the safe space to experiment with different communication styles led to immediate improvements in team dialogue.
Several supervisors commented that the Law of Connection framework would become a staple of their morning briefings, while senior managers committed to integrating the Balanced Scorecard and OKR templates into their next strategic cycle. Across the board, participants celebrated the balance of neuroscience, practical tools, and peer learning.
Core Themes Explored
Rather than a laundry list of topics, the workshop wove its modules together around a central narrative: emotions drive performance, and mastering them unlocks every element of effective leadership. From uncovering the business case for EQ to practicing Kaizen-style improvement bursts, each session built on the last—culminating in personalized leadership Blueprints that align emotional agility with organizational goals. This integrative approach ensured that theory never outpaced practice, and that every leader left with tangible techniques to apply from Day One back in the office.
